If You Are Calling After a Fall, Start Here

Most people who call about this work are not the person who will use the bathroom. They are an adult son or daughter, often out of town, often a few days after a fall, and the question is rarely which bathroom is nicest. It is what can be done quickly. A safety package (grab bars at the entry and beside the toilet, a comfort-height toilet, non-slip flooring, a handheld head on a slide bar) runs roughly $2,000 to $5,000 and often schedules inside two weeks. Nothing in it gets torn out later.

The Accessibility Ladder, Smallest Step to Largest

StepScopeTypical range
Grab bars only2 to 4 bars into blocking$150 to $400 per bar, $800 to $1,600 per set
Safety packageBars, comfort-height toilet, non-slip floor$2,000 to $5,000
Tub to walk-in showerNew pan, valve, enclosure$1,500 to $15,000, most $3,000 to $5,000; tiled $3,500 to $15,000
Walk-in tubDoor-seal soaking tub in the alcove$4,000 to $18,000
Curbless zero-threshold showerRecessed sloped floor, full waterproofing$6,000 to $10,000
Roll-in accessible showerLinear drain, fold-down seat, wide entry$8,000 to $12,000
Full accessible remodelWidened doorway, roll-in entry, new layout$15,000 to $25,000, or $15,000 to $35,000 with doorway work

Honest market ranges, not a quote. What moves your number: slab versus raised wood floor, whether the drain moves, tile size, and doorway widening. A comfort-height toilet swap alone runs $400 to $900.

Curbless and Roll-In Entries

A curbless shower removes the 4 to 6 inch lip that a walker catches and a wheelchair cannot cross. That removal is structural. The floor gets recessed and sloped, which on a raised wood floor means dropping or sistering framing and on a slab means cutting concrete, and the membrane then runs past the opening onto the bathroom floor because no curb holds water back now. A linear drain along one wall makes it practical: the floor slopes one way instead of four, so large-format tile lays flat and a chair rolls straight in. A roll-in adds a wheelchair-width opening, a fold-down seat anchored to blocking, and seated-height controls.

Put Blocking in the Walls Now, Even If the Bars Come Later

This is the most useful thing on the page. While a wall is open, we screw horizontal 2x8 or 2x10 blocking between the studs behind the shower, beside the toilet and along the tub wall. It costs almost nothing with the drywall off, and a grab bar can then go anywhere on that wall later, at any height, with no stud hunting and no hollow-wall anchors. Families resist it because nobody wants to plan for a decline. Do it anyway. In a Wood Streets bungalow or an Orangecrest tract bath, it is the cheapest insurance in the job.

Scald Protection and Handheld Showers

Older skin burns faster and reacts slower. A pressure-balancing valve holds temperature steady when a toilet flushes; a thermostatic valve holds a set temperature whatever the supply does. A handheld head on a slide bar matters as much, letting someone bathe seated. Riverside's hard water, in a city that sees 9.39 inches of rain a year, scales heads and cartridges, so we set serviceable valves.

Doorways, Clearances and Non-Slip Finishes

A standard bathroom door is often 24 or 28 inches. A wheelchair generally needs a 32-inch clear opening, which usually means a 36-inch door. Widening means cutting the wall, resetting studs, setting a header and patching drywall, flooring and casing both sides, and in a load-bearing wall that header is engineered and inspected. Inside the room the goal is clear turning space beside the toilet and sink, which pushes some jobs into a layout change: a floating vanity for knee clearance, or the toilet shifted for a side transfer. Our bathroom layout reconfiguration in Riverside page prices those moves. Lever handles replace round knobs, and flooring should be tile with a real wet slip rating.

Is ADA Required in Your Home?

No, and a contractor who says otherwise is selling something. The ADA governs public accommodations and business facilities, not private homes. We follow its clearances and mounting heights as good practice, because those dimensions come from real research into how people transfer and reach.

Areas We Serve

We work the 951 area code and the 92501 to 92509 ZIP band: Downtown, the Wood Streets, Eastside, Northside, Canyon Crest, La Sierra and Magnolia Center. The old core and the tract belt share one problem, narrow doors and 5-foot alcove tubs. Crews run the 91, the 60 and the 215, and we work in Chino Hills, Diamond Bar and Walnut. We also cover Victorville and the Victor Valley.

Why Families Hire Riverside Kitchen & Bath Remodeling

We are licensed in California, carry general liability insurance and pull the permits ourselves. You get a written, itemized scope an adult child three hundred miles away can read, and we will say when the safety package is enough.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How fast can you install grab bars and a safety package?

Bars alone are usually one day. A full safety package runs two to four days.

What does an accessible bathroom remodel cost in Riverside?

Most run roughly $15,000 to $25,000. Add widened doorways and a roll-in shower and the range is $15,000 to $35,000, with luxury work past $75,000.

Is a walk-in tub or a curbless shower the better choice?

It depends on whether the user can still step over a threshold. A walk-in tub ($4,000 to $18,000) suits someone who wants to soak. A curbless ($6,000 to $10,000) or roll-in shower ($8,000 to $12,000) fits a walker or a wheelchair.

Do I need a permit?

Generally yes once plumbing moves or a wall changes, and we pull City of Riverside permits. A straight fixture swap usually does not.

Can we live in the house during the work?

Yes in nearly every case. If it is the only bathroom, we compress the schedule and say up front which days it is out of service.

Do you serve my ZIP code, and are you insured?

We cover 92501 through 92509 plus Rubidoux, Moreno Valley and Corona. We are licensed in California and carry general liability coverage.
