Framed and Frameless Construction, and Why It Matters
Every cabinet decision starts with the box. A framed cabinet carries a face frame across the front, roughly 1.5 inches (4 cm) wide, and the doors hang on it. A frameless cabinet, called European construction, has no front frame. Doors mount straight to the box sides, which run 5/8 to 3/4 inch (15 to 20 mm) thick because they do the work the frame would otherwise do.
| Framed | Frameless (European) | |
|---|---|---|
| Front structure | Face frame about 1.5 in wide | None, doors on the box |
| Box sides | Thinner, frame carries load | 5/8 to 3/4 in |
| Usable opening | Reduced by the frame | Full interior width |
| Best for | Period homes, inset looks | Drawer storage, small kitchens |
What the Box Is Actually Made Of
Cabinet marketing talks about doors. The box decides longevity. Plywood holds a screw, resists racking and survives a dishwasher leak far better than particle board, so we specify it for sink bases. MDF is stable and takes paint beautifully, which suits painted doors and panels that must stay flat. Particle board still suits budget runs, clad in timber veneer or plastic laminate. We name the substrate in writing, because a quote that does not cannot be compared.

Doors and drawer fronts give the room its character. Maple takes stain evenly and stays quiet under paint. Oak and ash bring open grain. Birch is the value workhorse, while cherry and alder darken with age. For a painted kitchen, MDF doors avoid the grain telegraphing and seasonal movement of a wide solid-wood stile, which matters in a semi-arid climate that sees 9.39 inches of rain a year.
Standard Dimensions, and Where Custom Earns Its Money
Stock cabinetry is built to a fixed grid, and the 34.5 inch base height is deliberate: add a countertop and you land at the 35 to 36 inch standard finished height. The grid works until your wall measures 97 inches. Then stock hands you a filler panel, and custom hands you seven more inches of drawer.
| Cabinet | Depth | Height | Width range |
|---|---|---|---|
| Base | 24 in | 34.5 in | 9 to 45 in, 3 in increments |
| Wall | 12 in | 30, 36 or 42 in | 12 to 42 in, 3 in increments |
Interior Fittings That Earn Their Keep
Storage is engineering, not decoration. Lazy susans recover the dead corner every L-shaped and U-shaped kitchen creates. Pull-outs turn a deep base cabinet from a cave into a drawer. Full-extension slides, soft-close hinges and good door furniture are what your hands touch daily, and the cheapest upgrade on the job. We size fittings during layout, not after.
Scribing to Riverside's Older Walls
Riverside was incorporated in 1883, and the Wood Streets, Eastside and Northside housing stock has had a long time to move. Walls bow. Corners open up. Floors drift out of level across a 12 foot run, and a stock cabinet set against that wall leaves a tapered gap.
Custom installation solves it with scribe. We measure the wall at three heights, build in scribe stiles where the drift is, shim boxes to a laser line rather than the floor, and hand-plane the scribe to the wall. That is the difference between a kitchen that looks built-in and one that looks delivered.
Custom, Semi-Custom or Stock
| Stock | Semi-custom | Custom | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sizing | Fixed 3 in grid | Grid plus modifications | Any dimension |
| Materials | Limited substrates and doors | Wider door and finish menu | Specified by you |
| Awkward walls | Filler panels | Some accommodation | Designed around them |
| Best fit | Rentals and flips | Tract-belt kitchens | Older homes, odd ceilings |
Few Riverside kitchens need every box custom. Go custom where the wall is difficult, semi-custom everywhere else.
What Custom Cabinet Installation Costs in Riverside
Cabinetry is normally the largest single line in a kitchen budget, and it prices by the linear foot of run, the construction and the finish, not by a flat number. We quote after a measure, with line items.
The drivers that move it most: framed versus frameless construction, plywood versus MDF or particle board boxes, solid wood versus painted doors, drawer banks against door cabinets, the fittings specified, whether uppers run to the ceiling, how far out of plumb the walls are, and whether old cabinets need disposal. Paint and specialty stains carry more labor than a clear coat.
How the Installation Runs
We measure first, then order or build, then install in one sequence: demolition, wall repair and blocking, laser layout, bases levelled and joined, wall cabinets hung, scribes fitted, doors aligned, hardware set, then countertop templating. Most single-kitchen installs run a few days on site once the cabinets arrive.
Related Kitchen and Bathroom Services
New boxes are not always the right call. If yours are sound, refacing the doors and frames buys a new look for far less. Cabinetry also sets up everything downstream, so most clients pair it with new kitchen countertops templated after the boxes are set. A custom island build is our most common add-on, and a measured layout and 3D plan is where a good order starts. For whole-room scope, see our full kitchen renovation service and high-end kitchen work. We build the same cabinetry for primary bathroom vanities and powder room units.
Areas We Serve
We install across the City of Riverside and its 951 exchange, covering the 92501 to 92509 ZIP band and the market along the 91, the 60 and the 215.
| Area | Housing character | What the job needs |
|---|---|---|
| Wood Streets, Eastside, Northside | Historic pre-war core | Heavy scribe work, framed boxes |
| Hawarden Hills, Alessandro Heights, Canyon Crest | Hillside homes | Full-height runs, premium woods |
| La Sierra, Arlanza, Arlington, Magnolia Center | Tract belt | Semi-custom runs, value upgrades |
We also install in Yorba Linda, the Old Towne and tract neighborhoods of Orange and Chino Hills. See our complete remodeling services for the rest. We also cover Victorville and the Victor Valley.
Why Riverside Homeowners Hire Us for Cabinetry
We hold a current California contractor license and carry general liability coverage plus workers' compensation. We specify substrates in writing. And we check every wall for plumb before ordering, because a package ordered off a bad measurement is a mistake nobody can undo.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does custom cabinet installation cost in Riverside?
It prices by the linear foot of run, the construction and the finish. Framed or frameless, plywood or particle board, solid wood or painted MDF doors, drawer count and fittings all move it. We quote after a measure.
How long does a custom cabinet job take?
Fabrication lead time is the long pole and varies by shop and finish. The on-site install for one kitchen typically runs a few days, plus countertop templating.
What is the difference between framed and frameless cabinets?
A framed cabinet has a face frame about 1.5 inches wide across the front and the doors mount to it. A frameless cabinet has no frame, so doors mount to 5/8 to 3/4 inch box sides and you get the full interior width.
Are custom cabinets worth it over stock?
They are when the wall is not square, the ceiling is unusual, the run misses the 3 inch grid, or you need specific storage. For a standard tract-belt wall, semi-custom often makes better financial sense, and we say so.
Can you match new cabinets to my existing ones?
Often, on stain-grade wood, though an exact match to an aged finish is never guaranteed. Painted finishes match more reliably. If matching is critical, refacing the whole run is better.
Do I need a permit for new cabinets?
Cabinets alone usually do not. City of Riverside permits generally apply once work moves plumbing, gas or electrical, or alters walls, and we pull those.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. We hold a current California contractor license, general liability coverage and workers' compensation, with certificates available.
Do you serve my neighborhood?
We cover the 92501 to 92509 band and the wider Riverside County market, plus Corona, Rubidoux and Moreno Valley.
